WYD MADRID 2011: BENEDICT XVI PASSES THROUGH THE PUERTA DE ALCALA (THURSDAY, AUGUST 18)

On his way to the Welcome Ceremony in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles, the Pope was met by the mayor at Independence Plaza, one of the central points of Madrid.
The mayor then presented the keys to the city, a symbolic gesture that is given to all heads of state when visiting Madrid. John Paul II also received the keys on his visit to the Spanish capital in 1982.

Benedict XVI then walked through the Puerta de Alcalá. He was accompanied by 50 youth from around the world, dressed with traditional clothing.
