POPE MET WITH TRADITIONAL SPANISH CULTURE ON HIS WAY TO PLAZA DE CIBELES (THURSDAY, AUGUST 18)

After crossing the Puerta de Alcalá, Benedict XVI planted an olive tree in memory of his visit to Spain. A group of Spanish horse riders then welcomed the pope with a traditional bow.

Benedict XVI then arrived at the main altar in the Plaza de Cibeles.

Traditional Spanish musicians called ‘The Tunas’ performed for the pope before the start of the festivities.
